New Malaysian Banknotes: Distinctively Malaysia

Launched by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Haji Abdul Razak, the new currency series comprises newly designed banknotes and coins. The banknotes issued are in the denominations of RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20 and RM100 and will be available for circulation in the second half of 2012.

For this new series, polymer substrate is used to make the RM1 and RM5 banknotes. RM20 is now back in circulation.

Malaysia could still face bankruptcy, Idris Jala warns

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 — Datuk Seri Idris Jala said today that Malaysia could still become bankrupt within a decade if it spends borrowed money on operational expenditure such as subsidies instead of investing the cash.

“If our economy grows less than four per cent… and we don’t cut our operating expenditure, if we borrow at 12.5 per cent, if our annual debt rises to 12.5 per cent and our revenue does not grow, then it will happen,” Idris (picture) said today after announcing the latest investment updates for the government’s economic transformation programme (ETP).

The performance management minister triggered alarm bells with his controversial bankruptcy forecast last year.

Malaysia’s national debt rose by 12.3 per cent to over RM407 billion last year, according to the Auditor-General’s latest report released last week.

Mahathir: Quantitative Easing is Printing Money

Tun Mahathir Mohamad recently blogged on Quantitative Easing under his entry entitled – QE II. In his first sentence, he explained that QE II is not the short for Queen Elizabeth II or does it has any relationship with the retired QE II Cruise.

“3. What is quantitative easing? It is about printing and issuing money to overcome a financial problem. Lately Britain has printed 75 billion pounds to help distressed banks and others.”

He sarcastically commented that Malaysian would be damned if Malaysia were to adopt QE for our economic problems.
